Management/Ownership

Thirty some years ago there were three kinds of grocery store operations in town: the locals (small mom and pop stores, bakeries, meat markets); larger, locally owned and operated supermarkets; and chain stores owned out-of-market.

Today, the retail food landscape has changed dramatically. The mom and pop small store operators are gone, and so too are virtually all of the locally owned supermarkets. They are victims of mega-store national competitors, now operating in Central and Eastern Kentucky.

One local group remains, founded by Lexingtonian Bob Slone back in l959 - and still going strong today. Slone and his son-in-law Brad Newsome operate five locations Lexington, Morehead, Olive Hill, Grayson, and Jackson.

Why have they survived? Tenacity, customer loyalty, innovation, and a HUGE emphasis on customer service and satisfaction.
